Chet Cannon Gets on the Gaydar in the Real World Brooklyn

by Michael Martin on January 14, 2009

When Chet Cannon takes pictures like above its easy to see why people have him squarely on their gaydar, but is this all really a stunt?

Seeing the initial Real World Brooklyn cast photos back in August I thought for sure this gentleman with a purple pink scarf was “THE” gay cast member of the season.

The way Chet dresses and presents himself on the show gives one pause to if he is gay or not, which is entirely his business to disclose, but he emphatically declares he is straight as an arrow.

Then reading his answer to a question by Entertainment Weekly I thought was poignant to what may explain all of this.

He states , “I’m the Chet of Real World 21 because I’m kind of reinventing a new typecast

This statement strikes me at the core of what Chet may be purposely doing.

Working with many Real World cast members over the years I have insight to them preplanning an agenda before being on the show or a Challenge to purposely cause drama and get whats often called “TV Time“.

My sense is Chet is purposely reinventing to make himself more interesting and stand out, thus provoke questions and intrigue, which ultimately equates to TV Time.

*** Case in point, Chet’s curiousity on validating with JD his ”friends” strange backdoor sex stories, is it truly curiousity about others, himself, or knowing it will picked up by the editors? ***

In the end my opinion is that he is straight but is extremely curious and then using that curiousity to get his slice of exposure on The Real World Brooklyn.

clearly that is a picture from one of his pages (facebook/myspace)from some type of event he attended.

I sort of disagree about the whole thing with him ‘purposely’ doing what he is does or dressing how he dresses to get attention. If the home footage that he recorded was seen, it would be very obvious that even his parents think that he’s gay because of the apparel he decides to wear. I personally think he has a unique style and it’s actually great to see a guy, for that matter, changing things up a bit. But yeah, other than that, I believe he is VERY curious about ‘sex’ I mean, what pure person wouldn’t be interested in knowing things like that if they’ve never done nor tried it before. But I don’t think he does it for more exposure.

Hahhaha! Heterosexual idiots just can’t accept that a fellow heterosexual male can be effeminate. It really is quite amusing. You heterosexual idiots just need to accept the fact that all homosexuals are not effeminate or metrosexual and that is just a stereotype. And even if Chet is gay, who the hell cares? You’re actually going to post up a big internet page about this and publically embarrass someone who may be in the closet. You’re a douchebag. Let’s say he is gay and scared to come out, does this make you feel better about yourself you jerk? THis is why people don’t want to come out and admit their gay. I am not saying Chet is gay. So far he has not come out, so I am to assume he’s str8 but even if he is gay, good for him. Now leave him the hll alone!

Okay Chet Lovers, According to the wall street journal… Bow ties are back in…. J Crew has them….

After years under the chins of the pocket-protector crowd, the bow tie is cool. It now appears on “Gossip Girl” characters, fashion runways and sports stars — as well as young hipsters.
