Confirmed news from the Inferno 3 Challenge being that CT of Real World Paris was forced to leave the Real World Road Rules challenge due to an altercation and then Ty of Real World Denver lost to Alton in the Inferno.

There are reports that Alton is to appear at Northern Michigan Univerisity on Halloween but will be impossible due to the fact Alton will still be in South Africa at the Inferno 3 Challenge.

Drinking and Alcohol on Reality TV

October 29th, 2006 at 9:26 pm PST by Michael Martin

real world ruthie and puck

As is often seen on reality TV alcohol and heaving drinking abounds.  It is the worst kept secret of reality TV that producers often make alcohol much more available than food while also encouraging its use to get better footage / scenes.  An article in the New York Times exposes this HERE.

On the 2nd page of the article it speaks specifically about Ruthie Alcaide of Real World Hawaii as she began binge drinking, passing out, vomiting, and driving while drunk during the Real World in 1999.  The producer of the Real World, Jonathan Murray, said that on Ruthie’s application it stated that she drank as much as any other college student.  So to him it was an interesting wake up call to learn that many college students were binge drinking.  They avoided intervening until she got behind the wheel when extremely drunk upon which they had her sent to a clinic.

At the clinic Ruthie asked if she was an alcoholic and they told her she was engaged in problem drinking.  She has battled her problem drinking along with the stigma that continues to be attached to her.  Although she still drinks, she has learned moderation and speaks about it at college campus nationwide using her public exposure on the Real World as an example of alcohol abuse.

Jon Murray’s final statement would echo that of most if not all reality TV producers regarding alcohol on their shows, “It just wouldn’t be real if we didn’t let them have it.”

Tyler Speaks On How the Gay & Minority Real World Cast Book Less

October 27th, 2006 at 12:06 am PST by Michael Martin

tyler real world

Tyler Duckworth from the Real World Key West recently spoke to Between the Lines, a Michigan weekly newspaper for the LGBT community.  He spoke on the accusation by a previous interview he had with Details magazine, where he is accused of playing the gay card as his defense for his behavior on the Real World Key West, specifically toward Svetlana.

Tyler states that he does not use his sexual orientation as an excuse and feels the article is offensive not only to himself but to the LGBT community.

What I found most insightful is what he said at the bottom of the article in which he states regarding bookings after the show for college lectures and nightclub appearances, “You know what’s so sucky is that if you’re a gay person or a black person on the Real World you get maybe a tenth of the money that the white straight characters do.”

I have seen this to be true for the 5 plus years I have been booking the Real World cast, although there are exceptions and if a cast member can buck the trend it could easily be Tyler, who concludes by saying, “It’s funny when I actually do appearances all the girls want to hang out with me and not the straight guys from my cast.  I tell the promoters, ‘See, gay people are marketable’”

Real World Denver Hangout Bar Talks About the Cast

October 26th, 2006 at 12:24 am PST by Michael Martin

Lodo's bar and grill

Right next to the Real World Denver season’s house is Lodos bar and grill. Why is there a post here about Lodos? Well Real World cast members and production staff are not allowed to discuss any details of the show due to contractual obligations until after it airs, but this is not the case for the staff of the bar which is right next to the Real World house.

I posed these 10 questions to the marketing director of Lodos, Beth Shaughnessy, regarding the Real World Denver cast and what they saw:

1) Who do you and your staff think will be the most popular Denver cast member?

A: Well everytime we saw them, they were pretty shnookered and it seems like we saw Alex the most, so he would be the most popular cast member

2) What have you and or your staff seen or known to have happened with the Denver cast that you are pretty sure wont make it onto the show?

A: We noticed early in the season, Alex and Brooke making out in the hallway to the bathroom with no cameras around.

3) Which cast members entered Lodos and who frequented it the most?

A: All of them were in Lodos, together eating dinner & by themselves or with a few other cast members.

4) What was the most outrageous thing done by a cast member in Lodos or witnessed from Lodos?

A: Just getting very very drunk….and after their first week, the rumor around town was that they tipped $5 on $250 tab…but they tipped when they were in our establishment.

5) Is your server still seeing Alex and what reports did she provide on the house/cast?

A: She is not still seeing Alex, they hooked up for 2 weeks or so and she said the house was very cool and everyone was nice to her, but she thought it was weird when she knew people were going into the confessional to talk about her, so maybe we will see her…maybe not!

6) What was the strangest thing a Real World fan did when in Lodos?

A: The only craziness was you would see people run out the door when they saw the film crew to see if they could meet them or get in a shot.

7) What city would you like to see the next Real World to be filmed in?

A: It is always cool when they are in a different country. they should go to Antarctica in the summer.

8) How do you feel the city of Denver will be portrayed in this season of the Real World?

A: I think Denver will be portrayed as a fun city. There is always something to do in the summer and winter months (we are getting another snow storm tomorrow).

9) What do you hope happens to the Real World Denver house now that it’s on sale?

A: I think it would be cool if they turned it into a lounge/bar…they would have to change some things…do something with the production rooms, but who is going to buy it to live in?

10) What makes Lodos the place to go to in Denver now?

A: Lodos has been a Denver hot spot for over 10 years. Our rooftop patio overlooking Coors Field is a must be scene in the summer.

Lodos will be having Real World Denver viewing parties every Wednesday night when the season airs starting on November 22nd.  Watch the season that was filmed next door but dont look out at the house too much as a Real World Denver cast member may inside at the party.

Road Rules returns to MTV in January 2007

October 23rd, 2006 at 2:00 am PST by Michael Martin

road rules

Road Rules will return to MTV in January 2007 as it has been officially announced HERE.

MTV announced that this will be the first reality show on MTV where viewers choose who gets eliminated each week via an online vote by who they liked most and the least.  This means the following week’s episode will be determined by a real-time vote of the previous week thus filming can not be done entirely before the season starts but week to week.

“Normally these shows are taped months in advance, with it taking days to edit each episode,” said Jonathan Murray, the co-creator and executive producer of the show since its creation in 1995. “But MTV is the only network that would do something like this — to truly walk a high wire without a net.”

After the new broadcast episode airs, viewers will vote for one of two cast members — deemed the “weakest” by the rest of the cast — to enter an elimination face-off to air on MTV Overdrive. At the same time, viewers will determine the nominee’s challenger from an Internet replacement board of potential male and female challengers, which lives on MTV.com, along with video packages, personal blogs and statistics and background on each potential replacement.

Road Rules started in 1995 and was ended in 2004, but with the 2007 return it will consist of the most infamous former cast members and the location most likely being in Asia.
