MTV Real World Season 23 Casting Calls in March 2009

by Michael Martin on March 3, 2009

Season 23 of The Real World on MTV is now having casting calls throughout America after kicking it off in Philly, Austin, & Minneapolis the last weekend of February.

Real World 23 will film later in 2009 after the currently filming Real World Cancun, the 22nd season, wraps by the summer.

The types of people between 18 and 24 years old most sought after for Real World number 23:

  • Physically challenged or handicapped
  • Obese or struggling with weight issues
  • Going through the immigrant-to-citizenship process themselves or an immediate family member
  • Was adopted via the foster-care system
  • Grieving over the loss of a spouse or significant other
  • Deeply passionate about a cause or social issue

The main casting director for The Real World is Damon Furberg and he states, “The ideal applicant is someone who wants to do this for the experience…I think it’s fine to want some fame out of this but not to look at The Real World as a springboard or something to put on your resume.”

The worst thing to do at a casting call?  Damon tells Reality Wanted,  “Don’t walk into a casting and tell me that you know what I’m looking for because I don’t even know what I’m looking for.”

The upcoming locations of the March 2009 Real World casting calls are:

Saturday March 7th from 10am to 5pm

  • Columbus Ohio at Columbus Panini’s Bar and Grill on 1716 North High Street
  • Chicago Illinois at Goose Island Brew Pub on 1800 North Clybourn Ave
  • Columbia Missouri at the University of Missouri in Stotler Lounge on 518 Hitt Street Columbia

Tuesday March 10th from 10:30am to 5:30pm

  • Berkeley California at Bear’s Lair Pub on 2475 Bancroft Way
  • Boise Idaho at Reef on 105 South 6th Street

Saturday March 14th from 10am to 5pm

  • Eugene Oregon at the University of Oregon in the Fir Room on 1222 East 13th Avenue
  • Boulder Colorado at the University of Colorado in Club 156 on 1669 Euclid Avenue
  • Honolulu Hawaii at Level 4 Nightclub and Ultra Lounge on 2233 Kalakaua Avenue

Saturday March 21st from 10am to 5pm

  • Hartford Connecticut at the Black Bear Saloon on 187 Allyn Street

Two questions?
Does Damon Furberg accept applicants through email/online? And what ‘aboot’ Canadians..can we apply? Mixing a couple canadians in with Americans would def be interesting, especially since there is a huge following of the Real World on MTV.ca.!!

Thanks!!

I tried sending a online video, but its not doing anything but just sitting saying my video is being uploaded, its been 45 minutes now and i know it don’t take that long, the number thing reach up to 13588, then disappears, plus i email them and told them there’s a problem with their site, i don’t know if that would do any good, and i am scared of sending another one, Because i don’t know if my first upload sent successfully or not, usually the BMP site tells you it did, I dont have a video camera to actually send a tape,

Hi I’ve been trying out for the show consistently since the age of 22, I’m now 27! I know the cut off is 24 but I think it should be higher. Statiscally themost vieweres are between the ages of 25 and 30! I went to to a casting in Hartford,CT not expecting anything and low and behold to my surprise…I GOT CHOSEN AT MY TABLE MEETING to fill out the 16 page application!!! I was like WHAT!!!! I thought it was a joke!! But it wasnt. He looked at my application and Put my true age right there, BLACK AND WHITE and I still got picked. I filled out the application, it took 4 hrs ouch!! I didn’t recieve a phonecall:( I am begging casting of the RW, Bunim/Murray Productions please raise the age cut off to to at least 28 or 29. I want this experience more then anything on this planet. I know I would make a great cast member!!! I would do any thing to part of the RW family. I have nothing else.

There was a casting this past weekend in South Carolina. I was informed about this casting a couple of days prior to the casting. I never made the casting due to the lack of time and the distance of the casting. I was informed about the casting from a casting Director that works for the MTV Real World casting department. I just turned 26, I understand that the cut off for the real world is 24… To get a better understanding about Me in a little more details Please contact Me through e-mail or My myspace page!

Thank You!

If you got an E-mail in response to an online application asking you to fill out the packet and come to an invitation only meet and greet appointment with a casting director at one of the mentioned cities, what is that process like?

Is it like an open call but with a more specifically chosen group of people or is it more one-on-one?

When would another Washington DC person like my self be on the real world? Washington DC dont get look at or get chances like other cities all we was knowing of was the most murder city and the most city with aids but we should get the shot like other cities its time for a change when well it come. Washington DC got talent like other cities.

I think the Real World could really use me as a cast member. I’m funny, wild, charismatic, loud, blunt, gay, etc.. I was going to go to the open calls in Chicago, but the weather was SOO bad! Do you know if there heading back to Chicago, if there heading back?? If not when are they coming to Milwaukee, WI.?

Hey all i tried out for the season 23 in march in Hartford, CT. i had a cheerleading competition that day and was worried about missing the casting call, but turns out i was able to go- i rushed off the mat at the competition and changed into a white t-shirt and jeans and sped to hartford, an hour away from the cheer competition. i went alone, didnt know anyone, and basically didnt know what to expect. the experience was awesome though. i met a bunch of new people i'm still in touch with! there was all friendly young people there and we got separated into groups of 10. i was the only girl chosen along with 2 other guys. i was so excited!!! we went downstairs and filled out a 16 page questionare on EVERYTHING ABOUT OUR LIFE. some people were down there for hours, but i actually had to hurry because i was leaving for spring break that night at 6:00!! i filled out the application as fast as i could, got my picture taken and left for the airport. the casting people told me they would call us if we made it to the next round…

little did i know, they called me while i was on the plane getting ready for takeoff! they wanted me to come to an interview the next day, but i couldn't come because i was in florida! they told me it was okay and i knew my chance was gone.
when i got back from spring break, i called the casting guy back and left him a voicemail, asking him for another chance and explained to him i was in florida and couldn't postpone my flight. i didnt think they had time in their busy schedules but they actually called me back within 2 hours and set up a skype interview… i was so excited!

Reply

ct22222 August 23, 2009 at 9:57 pm

the skype interview was an hour long, and i held nothing back- i was completely honest and myself. as i kept getting call backs, i really thought i was getting closer to becoming on real world.
they sent me an email after the skype interview and told me i got an official call back and i had to make a 10 minute home tape submission…. which was due 1 week from the interview. i didnt get the email until after a couple days they sent it to me, so i basically had a weekend to come up with a 10 minute home tape some people work months on! and i had homework, a huge test that monday, cheerleading and work!!! i didnt even have a video camera or an idea on how to make on and what they were looking for.

ct22222 August 23, 2009 at 9:57 pm

turns out, my school has a media production room which they lent me a camera and i met a guy there who offered to edit my video – for free! i was so lucky… i scrambled around my apartment, campus, and at the american cancer society walk that night filming my life in 10 minutes… it was so hard because i had so much to say and put in, i didnt know if i was doing it right! i also put some movies of me at parties, cheering, tutoring, etc in from the past. overall, in a day of filming and such little notice i came up with a pretty decent home tape.
i sent it in overnight and waited for the call back, but never got one.
i'm not mad i'm actually really happy i made it that far considering i tried out on a whim.
my advice for anyone trying out:
be yourself! dont hold anything back and dont care what people think about you! i showed up in hartford at a bar BY MYSELF and met a lot of fun people just like me.
you have to have personality to even consider getting a call back, they dont want boring people!
i wish i made it but there's always next time!
