The cast of The Real World Brooklyn looks to differentiate itself from the previous twenty seasons on MTV by having the first transgender cast member.
The cast’s head shot compilation was posted on Vevmo and combined with my sources indicate the naming of the cast is as follows – starting clockwise from the top left.
- Kate
- Sarah
- Baya Voce
- Devyn Simone
- Chet Cannon
- JD Ordonez
- Ryan Conklin
- Scott Herman
This would be the first time a transgender cast member would be on The Real World and hints to why for the first time filming starts with eight instead of the usual seven cast members.
The reason I am told there are eight cast members to start with is because Kate may be leaving for the transgender surgery in Taiwan during filming and then return post-op – similar to another MTV reality series True Life.
Other interesting highlights of this cast include:
- Devyn was the 2005 Miss American Teen National Pageant winner and is looking to be a singer.
- JD is a dolphin trainer from Miami and had reportedly dated CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper according to the Gawker.
- Chet is both a virgin and a mormon so the rest of the cast have taken it upon themselves to help him lose his virginity when they go out, which is generally in Manhattan since the Red Hook area has given the cold shoulder to the cast.

One suggestion: why list her name in quotes? If you are using the logic that it is not her birth name, why not do the same for anyone in the cast who uses a nickname or a short version of their name?
Her name is Kate, not “Kate”. This is derogatory and bigoted.
The logic on the quotes for Kate is that I believe he won’t officially be Kate until after the surgey.
Post-surgery the quotes would be removed.
The name SHE uses is the name she uses. It has nothing at all to do with surgery.
Unless you list your name as “Mike” when you use a short version of your own name (or correct people if someone else does it) you have no basis for arguing for quotes when someone uses a name they were not given at birth.
Actually, that brings up a point. If she has legally changed her name (the article does not say if she has or has not) then that is her name. In either case, if Kate is the name she uses, that should be the name listed, not “Kate”.

Newsflash: Surgery was in June or July, and the legal name change happened over a year ago.
It is completely rude to out any transgender’s birth name.

Actually JD worked his way through college while bartending at a bar and animal training full time, but he was never a stripper or an escort. Your just jealous that you accomplishments will never amount to JD’s success.

I personally met Kate in Thailand where she had her surgery. I saw first hand the results and can tell you with absolute certainty she is all girl. Ohh her surgery was if I recall July 1. I visited her in the hospital the day after her surgery when she with her great sense of humor said she felt like some sort of Japaneese aname tenticle character due to the fact she had tubes comming out of her in several places.

Referring to another human being as “it” is disgusting and obnoxious. It also shows how little respect you have for other people. I suggest that you not speak on a subject unless you have first hand experience with that subject. My ex happens to be trans, and I have trans friends, and it makes me want to pull my hair out when I read ignorant, hateful comments like this one. We are all human, and all deserve to be treated with respect, so please, if you can’t do that, keep your comments to yourself.

God I love how some of the people would refer to Kate as it or he. Now I myself as I said met her in Thailand and I myself had my surgery a week before her. If you met me on the street you would not think of me as a boy. Before or after surgery. Now I realize that these concepts are a bit difficult for a lof of people to grasp but then I have to remind myself that there are still a lot of people that are dating their sisters, farm animals and molesting children and on Sunday go to church to repent thier sins. Actually I am not Kate from the show. We just happen to share the same name, same doctor, and about the same surgery dates. Mine was June 20, 2008, and hers was I think July 1, 2008 or around that date.

Its surprising to see that people can still be so ignorant. I am not Trans myself but have several Trans friends and its very offensive for them to be called by their birth name or birth sex. Very excited to see a transgender person on the show. People need to understand–many, like the person posting as “joe,” are ignorant. Hopefully this season will open their minds. For the record: gender is a spectrum. Not two groups of either male or female. We each fall at different points on the spectrum and we only place ourselves in the categories “male” or “female” because that is all we are offered. Why bother categorizing ourselves? Why answer the question are you “male” or “female”? Leave it blank next time and make the point that gender is complicated and we absolutely shouldn’t categorize others.

Watched the premier yesterday (I had DVR’ed it). I have not watched HBO since the early 80s but Kate is interesting enough to make me follow it this time.
I also was amused that the first housemate she met was someone from my home state (NH).

I just wanted to say that I myself am very ignorant about transgender people, I have never met or talked to one before so I am basically in the dark about the topic.I would normally consider myself to be open minded but I can’t shake the feeling of disgust and confusing when I think about it. After watching the first episode of this season I do feel compasion towards Kate and she has opened my eyes, alittle anyway. I know people are going to get mad and yell at me but I still can’t totally wrap my mind around the idea and I’m not that comfortable with it. I do feel bad about it though.Kate being on this show is a huge step for people to start to understand and exsecpt transgender people, so thats a plus.

I understand what you mean, actually. Unfortunately I’ve learned taking the more passive route has only ended in me feeling silenced and ashamed of the fact that I never stood up for myself. What a lot of the people are saying here is the difference between hate speech, and free speech. While yeah, even the hate-speechers have their right to have their go, it’s an unfortunate circumstance that the more people see that mindset the more they feel comfortable agreeing with it.
I can’t follow my own beliefs and feel that people should be silenced, because that’s just not right. Free speech covers everything, even when you don’t like what it has to say. Yet it can be quite a challenge to see what some people say. They don’t think, and they probably never have needed to in their lives. They simply open their maws and let filth spill forth.
We’re at a point in time where trans-issues are only gaining more media attention. It’s always been around, it’s just not so talked about. The more word it gains the more it scares the ignorant, weak, and uneducated. However I do feel that simply leaving it as “as long as they don’t hurt anyone physically.” is not quite right. It doesn’t take much for words to become fists, especially in our increasingly frustrating and stressful society.

Well it is interesting how some people view the topic one way and others view it another way. I guess in the big picture I really could care less. As with Katlin I am transsexual and I love a normal life. I do not have a lifestyle that is any different than what is typical. I work, go jogging, read books, spend time at the beach, have friends that are non trans. I do not discuss the topic with them since it is pointless as the discussions have shown. In actuality I have no desire but to live in the normal world like anyone else. Do I have an agenda? Nope. Is transsexualism contagious? Nope and I dont recall any of us recruting. Am I misleading the public in some way? Nope, I am who I am just the average girl who by chance had to make a few corrections to my body but in the end I am in the same boat as any other woman. Am I a freak? Well considering I live a life no different than any other girl it seems that to say I am a freak would embody all women as to being freaks.
Perhaps in a better light the fact of the matter is that anyone who is actively discriminating against people or spreading ill will is only hurting themselves since if we as a society were to constantly push certain groups of people away these people tend to become burdens upon the tax payers. On the other hand if we treat all people with respect then as a society we increase the probability of all people contribution to society in a positive way.
I’m very excited that there is a transgender on the real world i think it’s extremely important that we recognize them as people and the more awareness we have out there of the transgender and gay people then maybe we can prevent one more hate crime I really think more people need to stop and just learn to accept people for who they are instead of beat or kill or mock them. but i just want to make a small clarification point: The early puritans who came to the colonies were actually running from religious persecution in europe and came here to set up a strict PURITAN state. Anyone believed to not uphold puritan values was exiled from the colony– which usually meant death.
