Tyler Duckworth from the Real World Key West recently spoke to Between the Lines, a Michigan weekly newspaper for the LGBT community. He spoke on the accusation by a previous interview he had with Details magazine, where he is accused of playing the gay card as his defense for his behavior on the Real World Key West, specifically toward Svetlana.
Tyler states that he does not use his sexual orientation as an excuse and feels the article is offensive not only to himself but to the LGBT community.
What I found most insightful is what he said at the bottom of the article in which he states regarding bookings after the show for college lectures and nightclub appearances, “You know what’s so sucky is that if you’re a gay person or a black person on the Real World you get maybe a tenth of the money that the white straight characters do.”
I have seen this to be true for the 5 plus years I have been booking the Real World cast, although there are exceptions and if a cast member can buck the trend it could easily be Tyler, who concludes by saying, “It’s funny when I actually do appearances all the girls want to hang out with me and not the straight guys from my cast. I tell the promoters, ‘See, gay people are marketable’”
